Till now, Audi has stayed away from the coupe like SUVs. But not any more. At the year’s first auto show, the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the German car maker showcased its flagship Q8 Concept. Euro-Tech Motors takes a closer look.

A full size SUV, the Q8 is a direct competition to the BMW X6. The company is emphasising the car’s sporty intent – from the design to the dynamics – everything about the Q8 is sporty. A full 5.02 meters long, the pictures don’t do justice to the size of the Concept. It’s huge. The wheelbase is an equally astonishing 3 meters. Passengers won’t be complaining about room here. But it is strictly a four seater. You still get luggage space of 630 litres.

From the outside the Q8 reminds you of the 80’s Ur Quattro sports car. Just look at it! The big flat sides are topped off with a relatively slim window line. A detail that adds to the Q8’s sporty appeal. The Concept’s flat and wide C-pillar is reminiscent of the Ur Quattro and so are the wide shoulders over the wheels giving it a purposeful stance. One of the important details we should mention here are the digital Matrix laser technology for high and low beams. Audi says these illuminate the road in high resolution. We particularly like the straight, flat roof and the way it slopes down at the rear to meet the rear end. The car’s girth of 2.04 meters and a comparatively low roof combine to make this look like an SUV that will actually be sporty to drive.

We have no doubts about it either. It comes with a plug-in hybrid drive train which is comprised of a 3.0-litre gasoline engine producing 333 bhp and 500 Nm of torque along with an electric motor of 135 bhp and 330 Nm of torque. Together, these make the Q8 an athletic beast. 62 mph comes up in 5.4 seconds while the top speed has been restricted to 155 mph. What’s even better is that this performance is achieved while returning fuel consumption figures of 102.3 mpg when driven lightly.

The Q8 is intelligent enough to make the best use of power – boosting, coasting or even recuperating energy depending on the situation. On batteries alone, the Q8 can travel 37 miles while on a full tank it can go up to 620 miles.

In the cabin, the way driver interacts with the car is ground breaking. The driver uses touch inputs for commands that are augmented by the Audi virtual cockpit system. The system now runs on a 12.3 inch display with a full HD resolution.
